Do LPNs Take the NCLEX?
To become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), you have to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
The NCLEX is the board exam all nurses must take to practice as a licensed nurse in the U.S. More on that below.
Understanding the NCLEX-PN
While both RNs and LPNs take the NCLEX, they don’t exactly take the same licensure exam.
RN students will take the NCLEX-RN, and LPN students will take the NCLEX-PN. In other articles, I talk about the NCLEX-RN, but let’s focus on the NCLEX PN for a second.
The NCLEX-PN is a computerized exam that evaluates your practical nursing knowledge and abilities.
This test aids in determining your readiness for entry-level practical nursing practice.
Administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, it ensures you are equipped with the necessary skills for the nursing profession.
How to Become an LPN
Step 1: Finish an Approved Nursing Program
To start your journey to becoming an LPN, you’ll need to complete an approved nursing program.
Usually, these programs are offered at community colleges, vocational schools, and occasionally at universities.
Most of these programs take around a year to finish, combining in-class and hands-on clinical instruction.
Step 2: Take and Pass the NCLEX-PN Exam
After successfully completing your nursing program, the next step is to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
The examination is managed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
It is designed to ensure all new nurses possess the knowledge and abilities to deliver safe and effective patient care.
To apply for the NCLEX-PN, submit an application to your state board of nursing and pay the required fee.
Once your application is approved, you can then schedule your exam date and time.
Step 3: Acquire a State License
Following the successful completion of the NCLEX-PN, you’ll need to obtain a license from your state’s Board of Nursing.
Each state may have different requirements for obtaining licensure, so it’s essential to review specific details with your state board.
Step 4: Secure Employment
The final step in becoming an LPN is to find a suitable job.
LPNs can work in various settings, so take some time to explore your options and find a position that fits your preferences and needs.
You can look for job openings on nursing job boards or contact local hospitals or medical facilities directly.
